Preserving your cinema memories
Site curator Ian Watkins speaks to Alan Wilson, the last organist at the Granada, about a special reel to reel tape recorded by his Dad Fred in 1960
A special film featuring rare cine footage shot by projectionist's Malcolm Appleby & Ken Robey in the summer of 1960. Malcolm has kindly done a special commentary explaining how it all came about. Thank you to Malcolm & Pat Appleby for allowing us to use this on the site.
In August 2020 the building that was originally known as the Plaza Cinema would have been 90 years old. It was located on West Gate in the centre of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire and for the majority of its life it was known as the Granada.
After a long time in lockdown we've managed to catch up with Malcolm Appleby to capture some more of his Granada memories. We've also recorded the commentary for the cine film he took in the summer of 1960 and you can see that above.
Back in April 2020 we commissioned Lee Robinson from LNR Models to create a model of the frontage of the Granada.
To hear a special interview with Lee and see how the tiny model was put together, including a picture gallery of the build, head to this blog post.
We hope to display the diorama at Mansfield Museum at some point in the future.
Keep checking back here for more details.
John Price, the Granada Mansfield's new deputy manager, paid for a film to be made to document his arrival at his new post in June 1960. Two projectionists, Malcolm Appleby and Ken Robey, shot the colour footage using Malcolm's cine camera. We hope to put the full film on the website soon thanks to Malcolm who will tell us the story in his own words.
Memories of Mansfield's Granada Cinema (originally aired on Mansfield 103.2 on August 4th 2020 - special thanks to BBC Radio Nottingham for allowing use of archive audio from 1973)
A rare photo of the staff taken in the lobby of the cinema in the 1960s. Eileen Leverton (former Granada Usherette) has kindly allowed us to put this on to the site. The man in the centre is Granada Manager Fred Dawson and Eileen is peeking out behind him in the fancy winged glasses)
'My fondest memory is of having tea with Joe Brown in the granada cafe. We walked down the street together, he had a bag of plums and he offered me one.'
This website has been put together as a celebration of a building that became an entertainment hub for a community for more that 40 years.
It has now been gone longer than it existed but for many local people when you mention its name it still brings back happy memories.
My name is Ian 'Watko' Watkins, I'm Mansfield born and bred with a keen interest in local history. I have long been fascinated by stories of the Granada and for the last few years I have been collecting memories and memorabilia relating to the cinema. I have worked at Mansfield 103.2 in the town for over 20 years and I'm passionate about the area. I wanted to create a website dedicated to the cinema to keep its memory alive.
If you have any memories or stories about the Granada and want to contribute to this mini archive please get in touch via the email or form at the bottom of this website.
This picture was taken by Berisford Jones on Thursday 24th May 1973, two days before the Granada was closed for good. Thank you to Berisford for kindly allowing us to use the iconic photograph on this site.
A picture from the 1930s Plaza days (used courtesy of Andrew Hopewell). Andrew's grandparents met whilst working there. They are on the right of the photograph.
If you have any memories or pictures you'd like to appear on this site then send an email so I can add them to the Granada Grapevine.
If you worked there or visited the cinema and would like to do an interview with me, so I can add your story to the audio archive, let me know too.
I'm also always looking to add to my Granada Mansfield collection so if you want to sell anything related to the cinema please let me know.
Best Wishes
Ian
